Nueva Canción

Nueva Canción (“New Song”) is a movement in Latin America that combines traditional Latin American folk music styles—which have Andean, African, and Spanish roots—with socially and politically conscious lyrics. It began in South America in the 1950s—particularly in Chile and Argentina—and soon spread to the rest of the region. Many of the artists in the movement faced persecution, exile, and even death because of the powerful political messages in their songs.
